Brian Lim, Partner, Pantheon; Chair, EMPEA Asia Council

Brian is a Partner and Head of Pantheon’s Asia and Emerging Markets Investment teams. Prior to joining Pantheon, Brian worked as a Portfolio Director at CDC Group and before that worked at Watson Wyatt advising institutional investors on private equity and investment strategy. Brian is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, holds a BSc in Actuarial Science from City, University of London, and a MBA from the London Business School.

Brad Thawley, Senior Investment Manager, Private Equity, Teacher Retirement System of Texas; Member, EMPEA Limited Partners Council

Brad Thawley has spent the past 11 years in private equity investing both in Limited Partner and co-investment positions. Brad joined Teacher Retirement System of Texas in 2005 and now focuses on U.S. middle market buyout as well as global growth equity and venture strategies. Specific focusses include: sourcing new private equity General Partner relationships, managing, monitoring and performing due diligence underwriting of private equity investments for the fund, as well as reporting on private equity investment performance.  He sits on over 20 Advisory Boards for buyout, growth, and venture GPs.

Prior to joining TRS, Brad worked at Standard & Poor’s focusing on corporate credit ratings.  He also previously worked with Jupiter Media Metrix, an internet advisory company.  Brad received a BA in Economics from Bucknell University.

Jeff Schlapinski, Director, Research, EMPEA

Jeff Schlapinski is the Director of Research at EMPEA, where he leads a team producing industry data, analysis and in-depth reporting on private equity, private credit, infrastructure and real assets investing in emerging economies. In addition to providing quarterly market intelligence to EMPEA’s members, Jeff manages EMPEA’s annual Global Limited Partners Survey and is a regular author of EMPEA special reports and research briefs. He also interacts frequently with the media, fund managers, institutional investors and industry advisors in order to fulfill EMPEA’s broader mission of informing the investment community on the private capital opportunity set in emerging markets. Jeff graduated from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) at Georgetown University with a B.S. in International Economics.

Rae Winborn, Senior Research Analyst, EMPEA

Rae Winborn is a Senior Research Analyst at EMPEA, where she covers China. Prior to working at EMPEA, Rae participated in a 6-month social entrepreneurship fellowship based in Hyderabad, India, where she worked for a school analytics and improvement company, as well as the nonprofit organization, Ashoka: Innovators for the Public. It was during this time that she developed an interest in social change through financial markets. As an undergraduate, Rae studied abroad at London School of Economics and Beijing Normal University. She has had volunteer experience in China, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. She graduated summa cum laude and phi beta kappa from Dartmouth College in 2014 with a B.A. in Government and with High Honors in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.
