Principal Portfolio Manager, Pension and Endowments Department, The World Bank
Alona Ponomareva is Principal Portfolio Manager, Private Markets, for the World Bank Pension Plan. The World Bank Group (WBG) is the world’s largest development finance institution.
Mrs. Ponomareva is directly responsible for making private equity investments and managing the private equity portfolio. The portfolio represents approximately 20% of the Plan assets and is diversified both geographically (developed and emerging markets) and across investment mandates (buyouts, growth equity, venture capital, distressed, secondaries).
Prior to re-joining the Pension in 2012, she had spent five years in Ukraine with International Finance Corporation (IFC), making direct and fund investments, primarily in infrastructure related sectors. Before moving to Kiev, Alona had worked as Portfolio Manager (Private Equity and Real Estate) of the World Bank Pension and had also held investment officer positions in the Latin America and Eastern Europe departments of IFC.
Prior to the WBG, Ms. Ponomareva worked in the Financial Advisory Services practice of Ernst & Young LLP.
Alona is a Chartered Financial Analyst. She earned an MBA from Georgetown University in Washington DC and a BA in Foreign Languages from Moscow Linguistic University.
